Typically, a metal cabinet containing a series of sliding drawers that are arranged vertically so that it appears as if they are stacked one on top of another. The result is a tall, relatively narrow piece of office furniture. The drawers are sized to accommodate filing folders, which can be arranged so that they can be accessed and read from the front of the drawer toward the rear, or the files can be arranged so that they can be accessed and read horizontally from one side of the drawer to another.
