Description:

First stunning effort by Anne Hillerman in pursuing her father's mystery writing legacy. The author writes the policewoman into the common imagination in the character development of detective Bernadette Manuelito and provides a corrective to the male solipsism of the elder Hillerman's body of work.

Story:

This Navajo country detective yarn centers on a shooting witnessed by Manuelito. She defies department rules by getting involved and partners with her husband Chee to track down a cold-blooded killer. Surprisingly, past meets present as the sleuth duo are compelled to engage the aid of retired lieutenant Joe Leaphorn in pursuing their suspect across the storied red-rock badlands of New Mexico in a rapid and satisfying romp.
