The term, which is rarely in use these days, refers specifically to a female student at a co-educational institution such as a college or university with both male and female students.

One of the most abundant rock types underlying the Earth's surface, especially the upper oceanic crust, basalt is a dark-colored igneous rock. It can be fine-grained and compact, although as it usually reaches the earth's surface via volcanic activity and lava flows, hardening into rough, crystallized, pumiceous formations. Many areas within the U.S. Southwest are scattered with extinct volcanoes, and basalt is therefore abundant throughout the region.

Therefore, the longer the barrel, the slower the velocity of the shot fired due to the increase in friction that results from the increase in barrel length. Colt Manufacturing Company desgined and manufactured eighteen different models of long barrel pistols. Today, these kinds of gun are more for show than for actual use.

The long barrel pistol is also wrapped in mystery. The exemplar of the long barrel pistol is the Buntline Model or Buntline Special, a 12-inch-long pistol famous for being the weapon of the legendary Deputy Town Marshal of Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp. As the legend goes, a Western literary novelist, Edward Judson, purchased five long barrel pistols at the 1878 St. Louis Exposition and gave them to five lawmen destined for fame or infamy, depending on the story being told. Wyatt Earp, Neal Brown, Charlie Basset, Bill Tilghman, and Bat Masterson were the rumored recipients of these pistols. Because Judson purchased the weapons under a pseudonym, Ned Buntline, they later acquired the name Buntline Model or Buntline Special. While this legend is a nice tale, there is no evidence that it is true.

A light, short-barreled rifle with a limited shooting range. The name carbine originated in the French word "carbin," a lightly-armed cavalry soldier. A carbine rifle can be automatic or semi-automatic.

One of the most common wetland plants, cattails (or Typha) are reeds with tall, narrow leaves that can reach up to 10 feet in height. The plant's name is a reference to its unique-looking flowering spike, which turn into elongated fluffy seed heads in autumn. Native Americans all over the continent used cattail seeds and roots as food and medicine sources and the plant's stalks and leaves as weaving materials. A native plant of the Southwest, cattail's symbolism among Navajo and Pueblo peoples is usually related to water and rain.

Sinkholes, also known as cenotes in Spanish, occur naturally when water slowly dissolves bedrock (usually limestone or gypsum, which erode easily) until the ground collapses and a hole is created. Because rock erosion first happens underground, leaving a top layer intact, the collapse of that layer often happens quite suddenly. Water can tend to collect in the hole, thereby creating even more of a hazard for the unaware. Sinkholes can be found all over the world and vary greatly in size, ranging from a few feet to hundreds or more feet in diameter, and from 1 to 100 or more feet deep.

Although there are many versions of the Navajo origin story, in general the primary components and occurrences are present in most versions. According to the Diné Bahaneʼ, or the Story of the People, the Navajo emerged through various worlds to get to the present world, which is considered either the fourth of the fifth world. The Third World ( Niʼ Hałtsooí) is the Yellow World, and was entered after the People left the First, or Dark World, and the Second, or Blue World. In the Third World, a great flood occurred after Coyote stole two children from a the Big Water Creature (Tééhoołtsódii), whereas in the first two worlds, the People had fought amongst themselves and the creatures belonging to those worlds causing discord, insult, and anguish until they were asked to leave.

Also known as Blake's Lotaburger, Lotaburger is a fast food hamburger chain based in New Mexico. The chain was established in Albuquerque in 1952, and now has branches all over New Mexico as well as in El Paso, Texas.

An organism that forms as a thin layer of fungal and algal substance on soil, rocks, and trees. A lichen is a symbiotic life form in which algae lives inside the filaments of a fungus, and the two grow and reproduce in a mutually beneficial existence. Lichens can be found in every part of the world, but are especially abundant in dry climates such as semi-arid zones and arctic tundra. There is a large number of classified lichens that grow in a variety of shapes and colors.
