I have been a librarian for over 40 years and first learned to love the writing of Tony Hillerman while working for Northern Arizona University as their business librarian. Having just moved from Madison, Wisconsin, Tony’s writing helped explain the native cultures and their connection to the amazing landscape of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Visits to Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Canyon de Chelly, and Monument Valley were enhanced by reading Tony’s novels. Since moving to Albuquerque to work at the University of New Mexico, I have enjoyed learning more about Tony Hillerman, his writing and life, and his time at UNM.
Though born in the Midwest, I do love the landscapes and weather of the Southwest. The Southwest is drier than the Midwest in weather. The population is much less dense, and, with strong Spanish American and Native American populations, more ethnically diverse. Outside of the cities, the area is a land of arid, wide-open spaces. The beautiful (there are no words) Grand Canyon and magnificent Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly are favored locations for western movies. The Navajo Reservation is home to the most populous Native American tribe in the U.S. To the south and east lie other Indian reservations including the New Mexico’s nineteen pueblos and the Navajos' close cousins, the Apache. –Susan Awe
