The New Black Mask No. 7, edited by Matthew J. Bruccoli and Richard Layman, contains a story by Tony Hillerman -- "Chee's Witch," beginning on page 85. The story, according to Tony Hillerman, was an experiment with certain plot elements. He states, "Readers of my books may notice that one of these ideas later became an important part of The Dark Wind and the other the key to The Ghostway."
This volume also contains stories by other well-known writers such as Joyce Carol Oates and Ed McBain. It was published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1986.
On the cover of this paperback compilation, below the title printed in red, white, and yellow, is an illustration by Irving Freeman/Steve Macanga of a conventionally attractive blonde white woman in a form-fitting blue dress seated on a red sofa holding a glass in her right hand. In profile, looking at the woman, is a dark-haired man in a tan jacket holding a glass in his left hand. The names of other authors with works in this volume are printed at the bottom of the front cover.
On the back cover, in black on yellow, are teasers with thumbnail author photographs for five of the selections included in the volume. The spine is gray with the title printed in yellow. The inside front and inside back covers are blank.
