The Ghostway (1984)

Belacani

More often spelled bilagáana, this word is an Anglicization of the Navajo word used to refer to people who have white skin.

Four Corners, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah

The four corners refers to the spot in the southwestern U.S. where the corners of four states meet. It includes the northwestern corner of New Mexico, the northeastern corner of Arizona, the southwestern corner of Colorado, and the southeastern corner of Utah. The borders for these four states are also unusual because they run along straight lines and do not follow longitudinal lines, latitudinal lines, or natural boundaries. The Navajo reservation is centered almost exactly on the four corner boundaries and extends into three of the four corner states.

The Ghostway, Page Proofs and Revised Proofs, 1984

This is a pre-production proof version of the The Ghostway that was printed by Harper & Row in 1984. It contains numerous layout editing marks and final editorial corrections to the text of the manuscript.

The first page of the manuscript packet is an internal memo between copyeditors at Harper & Row. It reads, "Herewith foul manuscript, foul first pass, and foul third pass, with miscellaneous Xeroxes of repro for corrected pages. Please hold until the author's alteration bill is settled."

As a near-final proof of the printed book, the manuscript pages are not available online. Researchers can view this manuscript in person by visiting the Center for Southwest Research at the University of New Mexico.

The Ghostway, Manuscript and Editorial Correspondence.

This is what appears to be the second manuscript for The Ghostway, it seems to be lightly edited by Tony Hillerman and it is typed on a word processor.

The Ghostway, Draft.

This appears to be an early typed draft of The Ghostway and could possibly be the first draft due the apparent difference of word processing between chapters. The editing is very light and mostly is notes from the author in places where he feels that he should explain details in greater depth.

Big Reservation, Arizona, New Mexico & Utah

The term Big Reservation refers to the Navajo Reservation or the Navajo Nation as it has been called since 1969. The Navajo Nation covers 27,425 square miles of territory, covering portions of northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, and northwestern New Mexico. It is the largest land area that is primarily governed by a Native American tribe.
