Encyclopedia of the Southwest

Tony Hillerman's works are replete with vibrant images of the Southwest. This small encyclopedia provides insights into many of the cultural, historical, geographical, and natural concepts mentioned in his works. The purpose of this encyclopedia is to introduce southwestern concepts to students who may not be familiar with this region of the United States and provide further literary context to scholars of Hillerman’s life and work, the Southwest region, and Southwestern and genre literatures. Researchers, students, and general readers can access term definitions and literary, historical, and cultural resources regarding the Southwest and Native American cultures and traditions. Additional ethnographic information pertinent to individual manuscripts can be accessed through the interactive manuscript viewer. Several of Hillerman’s manuscripts are hyperlinked to the Encyclopedia of the Southwest, making its content, including pictures, videos, and written definitions, available to readers.
